where not to live - यस्मिन्देशे न संमानो

the place where there is neither respect, nor income, or relatives
nor earning of any knowledge, leave that place.

yasmindeśhe na saṃmāno na vṛttirna ca bāndhavaḥ ।
na ca vidyāgamaḥ kaśhcittaṃ deśhaṃ parivarjayet ॥

yasmindeshe na sammAno na vRittirna cha bAndhavaH .
na cha vidyAgamaH kashchittam desham parivarjayet ..

यस्मिन्देशे न संमानो न वृत्तिर्न च बान्धवः ।
न च विद्यागमः कश्चित्तं देशं परिवर्जयेत् ॥

this is said in hitopadesh, when hiraNyaka wanted to leave his place and go with his friend crow, because he was planning to leave for another larger lake. in this connection, hiraNyaka says three shlokas, about where should or should not one live? the first one is this.

from a practical standpoint, why do we live in or go to a place to live in?

either we were born there, and all our family has been living there. there are people who haven't left their village for 19 generations who have lived and died in the same village which was founded when their great-great-great-great grand father 19 generations before, en route, sat down to rest and found the place to be worth setting camp! and lo and behold, after 19 generation, it is a small village with its own zip code!

family keeps us in a place. there are students, or actually parents of such students, who make decision about which college to go based on proximity to home, rather than only the merit of the college.

or we may go to a place to study. o boy! is that news! majority of the youth immigrants in US are students. indian students are going to australia, even if there is racial attacks, but if US visa was not possible, then australian would work! got to get that degree!

and if not that, then surely livelihood, a better job can move people across globe. the US immigration and work permit is a great example of it. people from all over the word are coming to this place for a better job, and make dreams come true.

and sometimes, family has passed away or moved away, job is lost, no scope of studying (past that) and yet, we hang around. because everyone around simply adores us, loves or respects us. so we also keep on plodding even though nothing else is left in it for us.

but if you get none of the four - respect, livelihood, family, knowledge - then why stay there? better move on!

in the next posts we will see other such criteria for deciding where to live and where not to.

and now the language aspects of the shloka -

yasmindeshe na sammAno na vRittirna cha bAndhavaH .
na cha vidyAgamaH kashchittam desham parivarjayet ..

na = not
cha = and
vidyAgamaH = vidyA + AgamaH
vidyA = knowledge
AgamaH = inflow, coming in
kashchit = any, some

tam = (to) that
deshaM = (to) region/place

  1. I had a version where Vruti was replaced by Pritihi and ended with na Tatra divasam vaseth.
